I intended this image to be reminiscent of the railroad posters of the 1930s-1940s. There was often a pastel character to the paintings used in this period. The bridge was completed in 1937.
I am currently based in Tuscany, Italy and Cairo, Egypt, having previously lived in the US, Netherlands and Britain. Trained in the UK as an archaeologist and anthropologist, most of my images reflect my continuing fascination with the prehistoric and historic past. Images of non-European cultures and historic landscapes also play a large part in my work. My love of the past is also often reflected in the presentation of my images - which often mimics historical styles of representation from faux prints to postcards and antique photographs. Thanks Nigel. I've been really enjoying myself on FAA. I can see this will become more of a habit than Facebook which is getting a little nasty to surf lately.

Thanks, Windy Mountain. It's actually from a scanned negative which is about 7 0r 8 years old. it must have been amazing for your parents to cross the bridge - especially on a motor cycle! I'll take a look at the photo. As far as I can determine the "official" opening was May 27-28th 1937, but I have it in my head that there were, indeed, crossings before that in 1936. Thanks for stopping by, it makes a huge difference when people spend time and comment. All the best.

Wonderful photograph Nigel. Was it taken back when? Actually the bridge was first opened on November 12, 1936. My parents rode the first motorcycle across the bridge that day. They were the fiftieth vehicle to cross. Their vintage photo taken that day near the bridge in Oakland is on my site. Have not figured out yet how to enlarge and make it look better but I've posted it anyway. Lovely work. Thanks for featuring me in your group Historic North and Central America.
