I wish I could tell you what kind of flower that is. The leaves look to be like those of a geranium, though. I started to look up geraniums to maybe find a match, but I failed. :) I went through a few pages of images and my eyes started to ache from all the vibrant red photos, but I tried.

Artist's Description

Inca masonry is famous for being so precisely constructed (without mortar) that it is usually impossible to slip a knife blade or a slip of paper between the stones.

I have tried this myself and found it to be one of those well-known facts which is generally true. However, given a few hundred years up a rain-soaked, jungle-covered mountain, as at Machu Picchu (which was abandoned before the Spanish Conquest), plants start to take advantage of the cracks.

If anyone knows what the plant is, please let me know.

About Nigel Fletcher-Jones

Nigel Fletcher-Jones

I am currently based in Tuscany, Italy and Cairo, Egypt, having previously lived in the US, Netherlands and Britain. Trained in the UK as an archaeologist and anthropologist, most of my images reflect my continuing fascination with the prehistoric and historic past. Images of non-European cultures and historic landscapes also play a large part in my work. My love of the past is also often reflected in the presentation of my images - which often mimics historical styles of representation from faux prints to postcards and antique photographs.
