Artist's Description

It is likely that Penmon has been an ecclesiastical site since the 6th Century A.D.. Tradition says the celtic monk, St. Seiriol, established his hermitage here around that time and the site grew sporadically over the following centuries. In 971, Vikings raiders destroyed much of Penmon. However, by the 13th century, Penmon had become an Augustinian priory - dissolved in 1538. The site passed under the ownership of the Bulkeley family of Beaumaris who used most of the land as a deer park and built the dovecote near the church around 1600. The dovecote could hold around 1,000 birds.

About Nigel Fletcher-Jones

Nigel Fletcher-Jones

I am currently based in Tuscany, Italy and Cairo, Egypt, having previously lived in the US, Netherlands and Britain. Trained in the UK as an archaeologist and anthropologist, most of my images reflect my continuing fascination with the prehistoric and historic past. Images of non-European cultures and historic landscapes also play a large part in my work. My love of the past is also often reflected in the presentation of my images - which often mimics historical styles of representation from faux prints to postcards and antique photographs.
