Description
The upper part of a colossal statue of Rameses II (ruled 1265-1200 BC, approx.) which once stood outside the southern gate of the temple of Ptah at the ancient Egyptian capital of Memphis (modern Mit Rahina, southwest of Cairo, and across the river Nile). Although the feet and lower legs are missing, the 10 meter statue is a masterpiece carved in Egyptian alabaster. Its twin was carved in granite and, for many years, stood outside Cairo station, though it is now to be a centerpiece of the Grand Egyptian Museum in Giza. Both statues would have been brightly painted mostly in red, yellow, and black.
