Pena Palace, Sintra, Portugal - from the Moorish fort. The Pena Palace constitutes one of the major expressions of 19th century Romantic architecture in Europe. For many decades this hilltop - within sight of Lisbon - was occupied by the ruins of a monastery destroyed in the Great Earthquake of 1755. In 1838, Ferdinand II acquired the site and created a summer residence for the Portuguese royal family designed by Baron Wilhelm Ludwig von Eschwege who may have drawn on his knowledge of several Rhine castles and combined this with local medieval and Islamic themes. The bulk of the construction took place between 1842-1854. The castle was restored at the end of the last century and repainted in its original marvellously dramatic colors - reportedly a bit of a shock for many local people as they thought it would be continue to be grey not bright yellow and purple.
I am currently based in Tuscany, Italy and Cairo, Egypt, having previously lived in the US, Netherlands and Britain. Trained in the UK as an archaeologist and anthropologist, most of my images reflect my continuing fascination with the prehistoric and historic past. Images of non-European cultures and historic landscapes also play a large part in my work. My love of the past is also often reflected in the presentation of my images - which often mimics historical styles of representation from faux prints to postcards and antique photographs.
