The Casa de la Panadera (Bakery House) dominates one side of the Plaza Mayor in Madrid. The building has been remodeled several time since 1790, most notably in 1880. A contest was held in the 1988 to replace the 1914 mural. The artist Carlos Franco won with a design based on classical mythological figures including Proserpine, Cybele, Bacchus, and Cupid as well as other images representing the history of Madrid and the Plaza Mayor.
I am currently based in Tuscany, Italy and Cairo, Egypt, having previously lived in the US, Netherlands and Britain. Trained in the UK as an archaeologist and anthropologist, most of my images reflect my continuing fascination with the prehistoric and historic past. Images of non-European cultures and historic landscapes also play a large part in my work. My love of the past is also often reflected in the presentation of my images - which often mimics historical styles of representation from faux prints to postcards and antique photographs.
