Description
Roman Arches at Fiesole. Digitally-modified to resemble a watercolor wash.
Fiesole, which lies on a hill above Florence (Firenze), was founded in the 9th or 8th century B.C, and was an important member of the Etruscan confederacy. The first historic record of the town dates to 283 BC, when the town ("Faesulae") was conquered by the Romans.
It was an independent town in the early Middle Ages, no less powerful than Florence, and many wars were fought between them until Fiesole was finally conquered by the Florentines in 1125.
