Description
Al-Azhar Mosque in Islamic Cairo in Egypt was commissioned in 970 for the newly-established city of Cairo (replacing nearby Fustat). "Al Azhar" is thought to allude to the Prophet's daughter, Fatima, described as "the shining one" or "az-Zahrā′". The mosque is now the second oldest continuously run university in the world.
