Description
A different take on one of the finest views in Western Europe - of the cathedral (founded in 1093 and regarded as a masterpiece of (Norman) romanesque architecture), of Durham Castle (along the ridge in the distance) and of the Old Fulling Mill by the river.
The words on the bridge are by Sir Walter Scott and read:
"Grey Towers of Durham
Yet well I love thy mixed and massive piles
Half church of God, half castle ‘gainst the Scot
And long to roam these venerable aisles
With records stored of deeds long since forgot."
