Artist's Description

The Egyptian obelisk at the center of St. Peter's Square, Rome, was placed there in 1586, though it had been brought to Rome by the Emperor Augustus from Heliopolis, Egypt. Erecting the Aswan red granite obelisk—25.5 metres high—took the efforts of 900 men, 72 horses, and 0 aliens. My photo is of a mural in the Vatican museum, presumably based on the engravings by Natale Bonifacio for (the engineer) Domenico Fontana's 1590 manuscript 'Della Trasportatione dell'Obelisco Vaticano'.

About Nigel Fletcher-Jones

Nigel Fletcher-Jones

I am currently based in Tuscany, Italy and Cairo, Egypt, having previously lived in the US, Netherlands and Britain. Trained in the UK as an archaeologist and anthropologist, most of my images reflect my continuing fascination with the prehistoric and historic past. Images of non-European cultures and historic landscapes also play a large part in my work. My love of the past is also often reflected in the presentation of my images - which often mimics historical styles of representation from faux prints to postcards and antique photographs.
